Setúbal Península. A region of unique production!

The history of viticulture in the Setúbal Península, gets lost in time. Here, were planted the first vineyards of the Iberian Peninsula in 2000 BC, starting a new tradition that was renovated in 1907 AD, with the demarcation of the Moscatel of Setúbal region (Denomination of Origin), this region stands until the present days, making it the second oldest demarcated region in Portugal.
From here are born some of the best Portuguese wine, whose quality is established from the rich biodiversity present in the region.
No other region in Portugal, has so many different geographic differences, from plains to slopes, mountains and hills, as well as two rivers and the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
Vast in territory and with a Mediterranean climate (hot and dry in the summer and relatively cold and rainy in the winter) the Setúbal Península its a region that allows charismatic wines, with strong personality and unique character.
The presence of vineyards in plains composed of sandy soils, perfectly adapted to the production of high quality grapes as well a more more accentuated geographic relief, with vineyards planted in limestone clay soils, both protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the Serra da Arrábida (mountain range), results in a national and internationally recognized production of wines,

  • Second oldest denominated region in Portugal
  • Vast in territory, with a Mediterranean climate, originates strong and charismatic wines
  • Between two estuaries of the Tejo and Sado rivers, and proximity to Atlantic Ocean
  • 80% of sandy soils, perfectly adapted to the production of high quality grapes.
  • 20% of vineyards planted in limestone, clay soils, protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the mountain range of the Serra da Arrábida.
  • 2 demarcated regions - Palmela D.O. and Setúbal D.O.

Our vineyards

With a total of approximately 123 acres (50 hectares) of vineyards, split into eight plots of land, scattered around the noble viticulture areas of the Palmela municipality, where the oldest was planted in 1931, and the younger was planted in 2015.
In all of the plots, only Portuguese grape varieties are produced, with the exception of the Alicante Bouschet, which origin is French. With a sum of nine grape varieties planted, we highlight the Castelão, the Fernão Pires, the Moscatel of Setúbal and the Moscatel Roxo, as the ones that are most characteristic of the Península de Setúbal region.

Bem Gordo I Vineyard (1931)

Grape varieties: Castelão and Fernão Pires
Situated in the “Sítio do Bem Gordo” in Algeruz, Palmela
Planted in 1931, on sandy soils, and following the tradition of the era, the vines are not organized in a straight line and don't possess any type of training, which means that are not attached to a trellis, or other structures, making it impossible to mechanize. The vineyard is also composed by an area of centenary trees.
It’s a drought vineyard, without irrigation, that produces grapes in integrated protection management, which means that products harmful to the environment weren't used in the plants or soils.

Serralheira Vineyard (1970)

Grape varieties: Castelão
Situated in the “Serralheira” area in Palmela.
Planted in 1970, on sandy soils, it is a drought vineyard (no irrigation) with classic characteristics, maintaining until today small apple trees along the vineyard that still produce one of the most exquisite apples in the region, the “maça riscadinha de Palmela”.
Its vines are aligned, but don’t possess any type of training, which means that are not attached to a trellis or other structures. Here we keep the tradition of the manual harvest.
All grapes are produced in integrated protection management, which means, that products harmful to the environment weren't used in the plants or soils.

Cajados Vineyard (1986-2014)

Grape varieties: Castelão and Moscatel Graúdo
Situated in “Sítio de Cajados” Poceirão, Palmela

Planted in a sandy soil, only the youngest section of the vineyard has irrigation and mechanization, keeping the oldest section as a drought vineyard, with manual maintenance and harvest. Its landscape is marked by a centenary holm oak, that stands vigorously in the middle of the vineyard.

Lau Vineyard (1996)

Grape varieties: Moscatel Galego Branco
Situated in “Sítio do Lau” in Palmela
Planted in 1996 on sandy soils, this plot of land, has the distinctiveness of having a vine strain rare in the region, the Moscatel Galego Branco, commonly planted in the northern area of Portugal, the Douro region.

Here we still preserve the tradition of manual harvesting, to save one of the most ancient clones of the Moscatel grape.

Grape varieties: Baga and Moscatel Galego Roxo
Situated at “Sítio de Algeruz” in Palmela
This vineyard was replanted with two grape varieties, the Baga and the Moscatel Roxo back in 2013, on sandy and clay soils. The Baga grape variety is originally from the Bairrada region, in the center of Portugal, and the Moscatel Roxo is a rare and almost extinct native grape variety from the Peninsula de Setúbal.
Due to the singular characteristics of the vines, the size of the plots is smaller in order to ease a more thorough viticulture work.
